Learn About The Epiphone Les Paul Std Plus In This Gear Review!

Overview

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus is Gibson’s working man’s version of their Les Paul Standard. These guitar look and sound great but there are some issues with them that keep coming up, in my experience, of which you should be aware. In my experience, and opinion, the electronics and headstock design have been a bit shady for a while now.

Having said that, the tone looks of this guitar is still great for the money. If you are looking to add the thick sound of a Les Paul to your guitar arsenal, this is a piece of gear that you should consider. The set up on this particular guitar was not great out of the bo, but is was pretty easy to adjust and get playing great quickly.

Price   -   8/10

$549.00 This is a pretty standard price for a guitar of this quality and build.

Sound Quality   -   8/10

This guitar sounds pretty great. The sound of this guitar was by far my favorite feature. The Epiphone Standard Les Paul doesn’t quite keep up with the Gibson version but you can definitely tell that they are cousins in the same family. Nice thick Les Paull tone.

Build Quality   -   6.5/10

This category is what really hurts this guitar. In this review I was already planning on telling you guys about some of the less than satisfactory electronics that I have experienced with quite a few Epiphone Les Paul’s right out of the box. It was kind of funny that this guitar did not disappoint. I picked this guitar up from the store the day before I did the review video. When I started to play it I noticed that the toggle switch was only working on one pickup. I messed with it for a while and got two pickups working. This is seems to be a semi-common problem for these guitars.

Another problem that I see over and over again with this guitar is the weak headstock. I have seen quite a few Epiphone Les Paul’s with broken headstocks right out of the box. I don’t know if they have fixed this yet but if you are going to buy one of these, just check the headstock out really well for cracks.

I did like the fact that this guitar came with Grover tuners. It stayed in tune very well. This guitar looked great too, there were no visible flaws or blemishes.

Pros

• Thick Tone
• Classic Look

Cons

• Electronics are a bit shoddy
• Weak Headstock

Overall Rating   -   8/10

I like this guitar overall but the quality control issues really kind of turned me off to it. That’s a shame because the tone of this guitar is great and the price is right. If Epiphone cleared up the electronic issues and strengthened the headstock I would give this guitar a 9.

If you are dead set on getting an Epiphone Les Paul just make sure to check out all of the electronics and the headstock as well. You might want to check the return/warranty policy of the store from which you buy it.
