In this guitar lesson we are going to be learning the rhythm guitar parts for the verses of the song “You Shook Me All Night Long” by the band ACDC. This song is great because you only need to know a few basic open chords to be able to play all of the rhythm parts. There are a few small variations on the open chords so we will learn those first and then we will put the rhythms with the chords. We have provided you with the TAB and sheet music so that you can see exactly what is happening.
Let’s start out by learning the variations of the open G C and D chords. Play a regular open G chord. Normally you would be fretting the 2nd fret of the 5th string. Instead of fretting that note just rest your finger on that string just enough to mute it. Don’t play the 3rd fret of the 1st string. Instead play the 3rd fret of the 2nd string. That is the shape for the G chord. Now play a regular open C chord. Lift up with your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the 4th string to mute that note. Now play the chord and leave out the 1st string. The D chord is almost the same as a regular open D chord. Leave out the top note of the chord that would normally be on the 2nd fret of the 1st string. You can use your 2nd finger to just mute that note if you like. Check out the TAB if you need to clarify the specific notes in each chord.
Now that we know the chords for this song we need to take a look at the rhythm. It is worth mentioning that in between almost every chord change there is a rest or mute. Just be aware of that when you are looking at the TAB. I will leave the muting and rests our of the description for times sake. You should also know that I am using down strokes for every chord throughout the song but you can use whatever works best for you. Play the G chord once and then move to the C chord and play it twice. Now play the G once, C once, back to the G once and to a D once. This is the first phrase of the riff.
The second phrase starts of with two strums of the G chord and move to one strum of the D chord. Finish of the riff by playing the G once and then the D once. Play both phrases together and just loop them over and over again. Pretty simple song right! The cool thing about ACDC is that you can play some really great rock and roll without having to spend tons of time practicing.
