Bluegrass is one of the most popular styles of music to play on the acoustic guitar. It might seem like it’s hard to get into, but in reality, bluegrass guitar uses some very basic concepts that any beginner guitar player can grasp. In this lesson, Nate Savage will show you how to get started playing bluegrass songs on the guitar.
The first important thing you need to know is the open chords in the key of G major. The vast majority of bluegrass songs are played using chords from the key of G major. The most important ones are G major, C major, D major, E minor, and A minor (sometimes A major).
The second thing you need to know is how to use a capo. Capos are an amazing tool for bluegrass guitarists because they allow you to play the chords you already know in any key. Need to play in the key of C major? Put the capo at the 5th fret and play the chords from the key of G major. It’s that easy.
