The song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana is a classic grunge song that will really help you to work on your power chords and right hand rhythm. If you already know the basic power chord shape all you have to do is move it around to five different positions. If you don’t know your basic power chord shape check out the video lesson Guitar Power Chords. The up and down stroke indicators are just recommendations. If you find a strumming pattern that works better for you feel free to use it. Crank up the distortion on your amp, if you are using an electric guitar, and if you have a recording of the song give it a listen before you dive in. We have supplied you with the TAB and sheet music for the main rhythm part of the song.
The power chords that you will be using are an F, Bb, G, Ab, and Db. Start off by playing an F power chord by putting your 1st finger on the 1st fret of the 6th string and your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 5th string. Play that chord three times, down up down. In order to play the muted part in between the F and Bb power chords, you need to barely lay your hand over the strings just enough to mute them. I use all four fingers to make sure that no real notes will bleed through. Once you have your strings muted strum them four times. Move to the Bb power chord with your 1st finger on the 1st fret of the 5th string and 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 4th string. Play that chord three times using an up stroke and two down strokes.
Put your 1st finger on the G note on the 3rd fret of the 6th string and make a power chord based off of that note. Strum this chord once with a down stroke and then slide the shape up one fret to an Ab power chord. Play that Ab power chord three times with a down up and another down stroke. Mute the strings again and strum them four times. Finish off the riff by playing a Db power chord with your 1st finger on the 4th fret of the 5th string and your 3rd finger on the 6th fret of the 4th string. Play up down down. Remember to try out the up and down stroke indicators on the TAB to see if they work well for you. If you come up with something that is more comfortable for you, great!
It can be a bit tricky to change chords as quickly as this song does so start out slow if you need to. There are some variations in the rhythms and muting throughout the song but don’t let that throw you off. You can even try to come up with your own variations to give the song your own unique style.
