The song “Brown Sugar” by The Rolling Stones is a great song to learn because it is fairly easy but sounds great and it can really help you to hone in one the signature sound that The Rolling Stones is know for. In this lesson we will be learning one of the basic riffs in the song. This riff really only has one shape that you have to use in two different places. We have supplied the TAB and sheet music for you so that you can see exactly what is going on.
The first thing that you need to do in order to play this tune is make a small bar across the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings on the 12th fret with your 1st finger. Keep that bar there and add your 3rd finger on the 14th fret on the 4th string and your 2nd finger on the 13th fret of the 2nd string. Play the three notes on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings one time and them mute the strings. Now take your 2nd and 3rd fingers off leaving just your bar on the 12th fret with your 1st finger. Play those three notes one time and them mute the strings. (learn the finger numbers, fretboard numbers, and string numbers here)
For the next part of the riff we will use the same shape but it will be in a different position. Slide your 1st finger bar down to the 5th fret and play those three notes two times and them mute the strings. Add your 3rd finger to the 7th fret of the 4th string and 2nd finger to the 6th fret of the 2nd string. Play this shape two times and mute. Now play the three notes on the 5th fret one more time.
Once you get these two patterns down all you have to do is loop them together to play the entire riff. If you like the way this tune sounds, check out some more songs by The Rolling Stones.
